Why is that Cat Waving?

The Maneki Neko or "Welcoming cat" or "Lucky cat" is a common Japanese sculpture associated with wealth. The cat is commonly made out of porcelain or ceramic and is believed to bring good luck. They are commonly seen near cash registers at retail outlets.

There are differing interpretations for which paw is raised and the significance of its color. Generally, the left paw raised is welcoming for business and customers, while the right paw attracts money or good fortune. However, some believe just the opposite!! The other paw holds a Japanese gold coin and is symbolic of good fortune and riches.

A red cat supports abundant health while a pink cat promotes abundant love. A gold cat supports extreme wealth while a black cat defends against evil. The cat is modeled after a Japanese bobtail, explaining the popular white, brown and black Maneki Neko shown. The Maneki Neko has a long Japanese history reaching back to the Edo period, a division of Japanese history which was ruled by the shoguns of the Tokugawa family, running from
1603 - 1868.
